Keeping Cool with Chrysanthemum

Hello!

It has been a long time! It has been such a beautiful summer here in Western Massachusetts. When it is this nice outside, I just don't spend as much time in front of the computer.

However, we have had some incredibly hot, sticky days lately, so here I am!

Years ago, my Chinese herbalist turned me on to chrysanthemum and its hydrating, cleansing and cooling properties. Chinese people drink it year round, but especially in the summer.  It has a very pleasant taste, not unlike chamomile.  It can simply be made into an infusion or sun tea. Or if you want something really scruntious to drink, try something like this:

Chrysanthemum-Raspberry Limeade

In a one gallon jar throw in a small handfull of chrysanthemum flowers (can be found bulk in Chinese herb shops and Oriental stores) and fill the far 2/3 full of water. Cover and place in the sun for 5-6 hours (or so). Or, steep in hot water and let cool. Leave the flowers in the infusion

Into the jar add:

3 limes, juiced
12 oz bag frozen or 2 cups fresh raspberries
2/3 c. maple syrup, yacon syrup or sweetener of your choice

Chill and serve! You can eat the flowers, too!

Use any sweetener you like in this lovely concoction, but I suggest not using honey as it warms the body. Save it for winter warming drinks!

Raspberries are also known for their cooling properties. A famous folk remedy in Russia and elsewhere for reducing fevers is raspberry preserve. You can make your own raw version by mashing raspberries with raw honey, which becomes even more effective from  the immune-boosting and anti-bacterial qualities of raw honey replacing the immune-weakening refined sugar.

If you have sour kombucha, you can add this and decrease the lime juice. Lemon juice is also nice. So are frozen blueberries. Have fun with this!

Enjoy the Heat!

Seasonal Eating in New England: The Humble Parsnip

Seasonal Eating in New England?!?!? Yes, it is a bit of a challenge here, but every year that I live in Western Massachusetts, I learn more and more.

Being a Goddess committed to both hedonism and sustainability, I find it a great challenge to make a delicious variety of dishes from, well, not much of a seasonal selection most of the year. But, more of that this winter. It is spring!!! What does Mother Earth have for us to feast on?

Well, not that much more than in winter.

The roads of Hadley, Mass. are lined with old-timers selling their famous Hadley Asparagus ( referred to as "Hadley Grass") last week I offered some lovely Asparagus with Hemp Seed Aioli. It has been a big hit this week, so I will offer it again this week! But, what else is there to play with this time of year?

As I was driving by the Food Bank Farm in Hadley I saw, advertised on the side of the road, parsnips! Come to find out, the best parsnips are the ones that stay in the ground over the winter and are harvested in the spring. I got some and I have to say, they are the best parsnips I've ever tasted. I have made some Parsnip Chips for another of this week's specials. They are incredibly tasty!

A very versatile, easy parsnip recipe is Parsnip Rice. It goes like this :

3-4 good-sized parsnips, peeled and roughly chopped
a handful of of pine nuts, cashews, macadamias, or a dollop of coconut oil
A dollop of miso

Use the nuts or coconut oil according to what you are having with or adding to your rice. Pulse all ingredients  in a food processor until the texture resembles rice. That's it!

You can add ginger, chopped scallions, shredded carrot and peas for a "fried rice". Add peppers, saffron, thin asparagus, chopped tomatoes, chives and peas for a raw version of paella.  Add nutritional yeast, a squeeze of lemon juice and marinated broccoli for "cheesy" Rice and Broccoli. Processed to a finer texture, it can be used in sushi rolls. The possibilities are endless.

So, go forth and enjoy the parsnips!

Spring Blissings!

Beltaine Blessings! Green Power, Asparagus, and MORE Raw Chocolate!

Happy Beltaine!

In my spiritual  tradition, Beltaine (May 1) is the day when we celebrate the greening of the Earth, fertility of all life on our beloved planet, and all the different kinds of love that we enjoy.

Green is powerful. Green is the color of Divine Love made manifest in the renewal of life during the springtime. Green is the color of the heart chakra, where the animal and divine natures meet and balance one another in love, which makes us truly human. Green is one of the colors  associated with the planet/Goddess Venus, goddess of love , beauty and abundance. We humans have more color receptors in our eyes for green than the other colors and are programmed to be more responsive to green than any other color.  Is it any wonder that the best foods for humans are also green? Truly, as Dr. Gabriel Cousens puts it, green foods, with all of the minerals, vitamins, protein, fiber, living water and chlorophyll that our bodies need for optimal health,  are truly " a love letter from God".

Which reminds me...are you eating enough greens in your diet? If you aren't eating greens at every meal, then you might not be. My decadent raw creations  are wonderful additions to a diet based primarily on fresh fruits and veggies, especially greens. If you aren't eating enough greens on a raw or high-raw diet, then you may run the risk of becoming seriously mineral-deficient. How can you feel divine that way?

Green smoothies, green juices, green soups ( a savory green smoothie) and salads are great ways of getting greens at every meal. Kale chips are a fun way to have your greens, too- just remember that it is important to drink enough water when eating dehydrated foods! Green powders are fine in a pinch. However, I feel that they are way too processed, therefore devoid of life force, to be useful as a primary source of greens.

All of this talk may sound funny coming from a purveyor of raw chocolate. I am more than that, though.  I am your Muse for your happiest, healthiest, most luscious life possible! I can't create it for you, though. The most important element for your happiness in Knowing Yourself, and then acting on that knowledge. What is it that you need to feel satisfied and eat a healthy raw diet? Do you need creamy, tasty dips and dressings to help those veggies go down more joyfully? Some sweet morsels to go with that demure green smoothie? A hearty entree to go with that big salad? Chips and crackers to dip in your green soup? Or just simply some really good chocolates because, well, you deserve them ?

Giving yourself what you need, what nourishes your body, your spirit, and your senses, is an act of self-love. What better gift to give yourself on Beltaine, or any other day of the year?

Blissings,
The Raw Goddess
